Born in Madison, WI, John graduated from La Crosse Aquinas High School in 1999. He spent the first two years pursuing his degree at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. He would then graduate from Indiana State University with a Bachelors of Music Education in December of 2004.
He started teaching in January 2005 at Dugger Elementary and Union Jr/Sr High School in Dugger, IN. The following summer he was hired to be the band director at Crawford County Jr/Sr High School in Marengo, IN. He developed that program from a school without a marching band to a 5th place state finish in 2015. In 2017 he accepted a job to be the Head Band Director at the Progreso Independent School District in Progreso, TX.
John started writing and composing as a side hobby between practice sessions while still at Minnesota (this is also where his undying love of the Minnesota Twins was born), though his earlier works were modeled after the symphonic works he was studying. Regardless, he started learning more of the advanced techniques of part-writing, texture, and harmony. He developed that curiosity into writing for a multitude of solo instruments and small ensembles, though he was an education major.
John spent his summers between 1995-2000 marching in the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps. It was this experience, along with his education, that gave him the idea of perhaps focusing his writing for the marching arts. When he started working for various marching bands in college, he started paying attention more to the structure of marching band music and arrangements. This increasing knowledge, along with his love for corps-style marching shows and also the first hand knowledge of what directors go through when designing a show, has culminated into the works that you can sample on this site.
